Digestive and bowel disorders
The term ‘digestive and bowel disorders’ encompasses a broad range of symptoms, with varying degrees of severity but, even in their mildest forms, discomfort in this area can be hugely debilitating.
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. On clinical diagnosis, their treatment might include medication, surgery and the need for long-term maintenance.
Gastritis is an inflammation of the lining of the stomach which can be acute or chronic. It might be triggered by excessive alcohol use, chronic vomiting, stress, the use of certain drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and pernicious anaemia. The most common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, indigestion, loss of appetite, and blood in the stools. Clinical treatment usually involves drug therapy.
Reflux is a condition caused by repeated exposure of the lower oesophagus to the contents of the stomach with symptoms ranging from temporary discomfort, through oesophageal damage to adenocarcinoma. Conventional treatment options ranges from inhibitory drugs to surgery.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional digestive disorder, with women 2-3 times more likely to suffer. The condition often begins in adolescence or early adulthood, when hormonal changes are taking place, but can be exacerbated by diet and stress. It can also lead to depression.
Acupuncture can help address the symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders by calming the central nervous system, calming the mind, reducing pain and inflammation and allowing the body to harness its own ability to heal.
